Knitting Minds Need to Know

Well, actually just my own knitting mind. If you are pregnant & received a knitted baby gift that was "hand-wash only", how would you feel about that? Would it be a terrible pain?? Obviously if it were a hat or mittens or booties you wouldn't have to wash them that often & a sweater only if the wee one puked on it or whatnot. I realize that something {especially like a sweater} that is machine washable probably would be a lot more practical, eh?? Would you even appreciate a knitted gift?? Be honest, please. Obviously if you are expecting & you know me in real life, there is a good chance that I might want to knit something for your newest peanut. Considering how many hours go into the knitting part {not to mention the agonizing over the perfect pattern & picking the yarn ~ OY!}, I just want to know if I should just pick up something for your babe at Target instead ;>)

I guess if you are not pregnant, you could chime in here too. Have you ever received a knitted baby gift? Did you like it? If not, was it because you are just not into hand-made items or maybe it was dorky/grandmother-ish {no offense meant to grandmothers here}?

Well....
I would not care if I had to hand wash it... at all! It's not like I have to hand cream a bunch of clothes -- I don't hand wash anything so a couple of items wouldn't kill me.
I would prefer something made instead of something that is bought -- I think it means more.

Love your favorite cousin!

Considering that it wouldn't be adult size, I don't think it would be a pain. I have gotten knitted blankets with both of the kids (a couple actually) and I feel like they are too beautiful to use...I love them though and plan to use them when the kids are a little bit oler. Like for cuddling up with while they read a book or something. And, they were both born when it was warm out so I really didn't need too many heavy blankets. Anyway, now I am rambling. Hand wash only - no prob!

I think it would be great IF the gift came with care instructions. My feeling with knitted items...is just that I am scared to ruin them. I would own probably many pieces of shorties, longies, soakers etc...IF I knew how to take care of them. But because I don't....I worry that I will just use them once and then toss them in a pile of "things that were used for a picture". KWIM? It is precious to receive hand made items in this day! Go for it!

Ok, thank you, thank you, thank you for all the input. {And for Alicia as well who gave me her input in person as Blogger keeps locking up on her.} I will definitely include washing instructions & possibly even some wool-wash if the item is wool. I really only enjoy knitting with natural fibers, so your wee one would have something natural against the skin. I also plan to include any relevant information on the yarn as well, such as where it was spun or the color or whatnot. Yippee! Can't wait to start casting on......

Truth be told, I have knitting projects working for two of you already ;>)
